I've been using these since the early 1970s. They are essentially the original interchangeable blade screwdrivers. Until sometime around 2000 Xcelite was the considered the top-quality tool brand in the electronics field. Don't mistake these for the type of "modular" tools that are made in Taiwan and marketed to single ladies and homeowners. They are made of strong, properly tempered tool steel, although I have shattered a few blades over the last 40 years.
For craftsmen that need to work with lots of various types of fasteners they are very handy, and still a pretty high quality tool. The 99s use interchangeable blades of approximately 4" length, making them unlike bit-holding drivers which use the popular 1/4" hex drive bits, and that's their advantage. When a screw head is recessed in a pocket or between other parts of an assembly, there is often no room for a bit-holding type screwdriver shaft, but an ordinary screwdriver blade will fit easily. The down-side of the 99 in these situations is that they are not magnetic, to hold the fastener to the blade when inserting or withdrawing the driver (use a dab of adhesive). The other disadvantage of the 99 design is that the blades don't hold well in an ordinary 3-jaw drill chuck, or anything other than an Xcelite handle. Recently a chuck adapter has been introduced and is included in the 99PA50 kit INSTEAD of a handle.
I need to have screwdrivers for at least 30 different sizes and styles, and I most often need to carry them in a handheld toolbox or toolbag. That's why I still use em.
